so here's a super-subjective question that i looked around to find the answer to, to no avail. maybe this group could take a stab at it.

i was wondering if there was a consensus on a "ten best" list for living american critical theorists. regardless of focus or stance or area of interest. or if we are living in such a factionalized critical epoch that no such list is possible.

i would love to hear your thoughts on this, & any lists you may have seen or generated.

this might not be the best community for that question. After all, you're essentially asking us to rank our own schools against each other's. I'd pose application-related questions to who_got_in's English thread, or it's spinoff: wgi_lounge_09.

Briefly, it REALLY, REALLY depends on

1. What do you want to study? ("theory" isn't an answer in itself)
2. What do you consider to be "theory?" how does it relate to literature? why aren't you in comp lit or a continental philosophy program?
3. What approach or approaches do you want to take? What are you sympathetic to? What issues are you trying to address? What period do you want to work in?

Sure, we can compile a list of names...and argue over it...but I don't think that it's at all helpful, unless you have a more defined and personal sense of what you want to study, and who you want to study it under

If you're looking for big names, I'd skim through the Hopkin's guide to critical theory, and see whose names show up, or even wikipedia's literary theory page, to see who is still alive and kickin'
