On the subject of languages...

I need to polish up my French.
I have a basic understanding of grammar, and a very basic vocabulary level. Any suggestions on texts I could use for self-guided study?
I'd also appreciate some input on beginner's German.
Thanks!

we should put these in the memories, but i found both of these entries (http://community.livejournal.com/englishobsessed/22583.html and http://community.livejournal.com/englishobsessed/17880.html) helpful in relation to languages in general.

and just an fyi, i recently passed my french translation exam. the text used was de beauvoir's the second sex, which is pretty straightforward (i say this having studied abroad and having worked under two french bosses who required me to translate french to english). you might want to check out what sort of texts you're required to translate and work towards understanding the complexity of those texts.

Thanks for the links. I'll definitely start checking a few of those books out.
This is just preemptive studying. I'm not even in a program yet.... so nervous.

For German, I've been finding April Wilson's German Quickly very helpful and good.

I've been using LiveMocha, which I think I read about on Applying to Grad. I like it.

I like "Vorsprung" for very beginner German.
