I need to find a small, portable device that has storage space and the ability to display PDF files on a nifty little screen.  I'm tired of lugging my laptop everywhere when all I want to do is read some articles and take a few notes here and there.  Printing is out of the question, and, before anyone suggests it, I cannot afford one of those Kindle deals from Amazon.  Any suggestions?

Sony eReader. They are at least $100 cheaper than the Kindle, and oh my god is it worth every penny. I love that thing.

so I'm a bit of a technophile.
Ok, to clarify: the old Sony Reader Digital Book (the 505) does not take notes, and is the one that I have. I love it dearly, and while it does not take notes, I find a small notebook + reader works just fine for me, and it does allow bookmarks. It also comes with 100 classic book titles for free (I went for 2 semesters of my English MA only buying a few books here or there with this), has a bunch of color options, and there is even a 007 James Bond version, if you are into that thing.

The more recent reader (700) is $399, the same price (I think?) as the kindle, and takes notes, has its own light, and features a supernice touch screen. If I didn't already have the 505 (and could afford to spend the money) I would buy this one, because it's basically the best thing ever.

Cheapest option:
The iPod touch. You can download apps to take notes, apps to read eBooks and PDFs. The screen is way smaller, it's backlight (this irritates my eyes after a while), and it's all around less elegant, but you get an education discount for being in school, plus it's not that expensive, plus you get an iPod touch out of the deal, and they're not so bad by themselves.

Thanks for the information. When I get my money from school next term, I know where some of it will be going.

There are also some new mini-laptops (8-9" displays). I've seen these as low as $249, and Asus, Acer, Lenovo, Dell and HP all have models (perhaps others do, too).
